Double Shampooing: Myth or Magic?

CurlyEllie Gentle Shampoo and Nourishing Conditioner

FACT !!

CurlyEllie Gentle Shampoo will only foam when your hair is clean so getting your curls clean sometimes does require a cheeky double cleanse.

The question is, is regular and double shampooing good or bad for your precious hair ?

Generally, most of us can get away with applying the shampoo after wetting our hair.. but there is something to be said about using the shampoo on dry hair - especially for oily hair. I would always encourage you to try the shampoo on dry hair and double wash if you have oily hair or have used products with oils for styling.

Simple answer is, it is not bad for your hair and there are definitely benefits - but not all shampoos are made equal.

There  several benefits to both hair and scalp to double shampooing including :

  • extending time between wash days
  • keeping your scalp clean to promote hair growth
  • lifting your hair from the roots to give volume

The oiler the hair, the better it is to apply on dry hair and directly where the oiliness is more prevalent and is building up.

Double cleansing should only really be attempted if you are using a suphate free, hydrating shampoo.

This will ensure that your hair is properly clean, whilst also nourishing your curls.

Using a gentle, hydrating shampoo with also guarantee your hair doesn’t get dry OR wash away too many of the natural oils your scalp produces, which is the myth of double shampooing!

How to double wash sucessfully :

This is done in two wash stages

Wash 1: Use the Shampoo on dry hair, paying special attention to the scalp. This will throughly clean the scalp and get rid of any oily or greasy residue from the environment and products used during the week that may have built up, layer after layer each day.

  1. Apply shampoo directly on the oily areas while the hair is still dry.
  2. Add just enough warm water to massage the shampoo into the hair.
  3. Rinse thoroughly and apply enough shampoo to get a second lather.

Ultimately, you want to make sure you are working from a clean base that has been gently cleansed, preparing your hair for the real clean.

RINSE OFF AND GET READY FOR WASH 2

Wash 2: In this stage, add shampoo to your already wet hair and massage shampoo unto the hair - because you already cleaned the roots in the first stage, you can concentrate on the hair strands and really clean and nourish your the hair.

TIPS

  1. Use your fingers to finger comb along the length of the hair. This gently detangles your hair. Finger detangle as much as possible.

  2. Leave the main detangling to after the Nourishing Conditioner is applied.

  3. Rinse off

This will give you a deeper clean and you can finally benefit from the nourishing properties of the shampoo.

TIP: To save on water, apply the first shampoo application onto dry hair! This is especially beneficial if your hair is oily. Read a little more on shampooing onto dry hair here!

When to double cleanse:

  • If your hair has a tendency to get greasy, but your ends are really dry.
  • If you use a lot of styling products (which can cause product build up).
  • Your hair is very thick.
  • You simply want to try to reduce the amount of washes in the week.

Bonus Tip: Shampoo is always best when paired with our Nourishing Conditioner!
